January 2019 recap

Episode 158: January 2019 Recap

Bosses, here we go, the first recap episode of 2019! We’re going to dive into the month that was for Scoop Studios and Small Business Boss. Let’s do it.

I started my year with the word of the year READY, and man, was I ready for the year to start. And now 31 days in, I gotta admit, I’m a bit antsy. I’m impatient by nature, so I need to constantly remind myself that I got lots of time.

If you’re with me. Let’s all just chill for a second and realize we don’t have to do everything right this very second. Now, let’s get into the month that was.

For Scoop Studios

We started the year with a bit of a question mark around new business, but I’m happy to report that the goal was achieved for the month. We signed on a new ongoing client for a 12-month contract, and I’m super excited about the work we’ll be doing with them. Then, another client that we love doubled their current engagement, and we had a couple of projects come in as well.

For the quarter, we set some ambitious revenue goals, and we’re on our way. Quite frankly, I’m not 100% sure exactly how it’s going to happen, but by math, we need to sign 3 to 4 new retainer clients in the next two months. What I really want to see is more ongoing retainer style clients to create stability month over month. After having a few clients wrap up in the fall, I want to get back to having that monthly baseline — and then ADD to it!

It’s taken some time to feel ready for that kind of sustained growth. Honestly, after Brittany’s departure and changes to our team, I wanted to ensure we were in a place where a period of growth could be sustained. And, yes, it’s taken since May for me to feel that way after navigating our team completely being reconfigured, killing off a large part of our service offering and more.

I’m glad we took that time — as we’re stronger — and I wanted to share that with you because it’s not always about scale and growth. It’s okay to take a beat and get your foundations handled.

In other news, well, there’s not all that much to report! We’re really focused on serving our clients and new business development right now, so stay tuned for further updates.

For Small Business Boss

The Double It Mastermind started in January, and we’re off to an amazing start. I had 1:1 calls with everyone in the mastermind, plus, we had a couple of workshops and hot seats.

And prepare for me to gush about the 2019 cohort. They are amazing. I’ll be sharing them with you throughout the year as it’s impossible not to talk about them.

For the Society, we did our quarterly goal setting call, and I have some new things I’m planning for the members this quarter too.

There’s been a lot of behind-the-scenes things I’m working on that aren’t super noteworthy for Small Business Boss. Truthfully, they’re all kind of boring, and to be transparent, I purposefully didn’t stack this month with any extras as January is up and down with weather and my mood. And I’m glad I got wise to that this year, as I typically need more sleep and my routine gets thrown off with snow days. Leaving that margin means way less stress later.

But there is one thing I’m REALLY excited about for Small Business Boss — the Summit. We’re pretty much ready to roll. In February, we’re launching it to our current clients and Society members, and we’ll be opening up enrollment in March for everyone else.

A few details in case you want to get an amazing event on your calendar this spring. The Summit will be held in Ottawa from June 5th to 6th. We have a great co-working location right downtown and a speaker lineup that’s off the hook.

Best of all, this event isn’t going to be all butt in chair and boring presentations. It will be interactive, collaborative and you’ll walk away with new connections.

If you want to be the first to get tickets when we release them to the public, just send us an email at hello@smallbusinessboss.co, so we can send you an invite in early March.
